Objective: To investigate the effect of periods of hunger and satiety on the sense of smell
Method: Two Sniffin ‘Sticks’ odor tests were applied to 20 men and 28 women who applied to the Ear, Nose and Throat clinic of Istanbul Taksim Training and Research Hospital twice during 16 hours of fasting (before iftar) and 1 hour after fasting on the same day.
Findings: Mean age was 33.6 ± 9.7 (range 20-72), mean height was 169.1 ± 7.6 (range 150.0-185.0) cm, mean weight was 71.2 ± 17.6 (range 50.0-85.0) kg, body mass index was 24.8 ± 5.3 -55.9). Identification scores were significantly higher in hunger group (fasting 14.0, fasting 13.0). Threshold (T) scores were significantly higher in the fasting group (7.3 at fasting, 6.2 at fullness). Discrimination scores were significantly higher in the fasting group (fasting 14.0, fasting 13.0). When the patients with fasting T values of 9 and below were compared among themselves, the difference (gap) was found to be significantly higher in the group with over 9 patients.
Conclusion: While the sense of smell increases in fasting, it decreases in toughness.

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate odor functions in women with iron deficiency anemia.
Method: This study included 50 patients with iron deficiency and 50 volunteers. Patients’ odor functions were assessed by Sniffin Sticks odor test. The iron deficiency was diagnosed according to World Health Organization criteria.
Findings: The comparison of Threshold and TDI values revealed that values in patients with iron deficiency anemia were significantly lower than control group. However, there was no significant difference between groups in terms of odor discrimination values.
Conclusion: Iron deficiency anemia leads to a decrease in odor functions and a decrease in hemoglobin levels results in a further decline in the olfactory function. This study has a negative effect on the level of smell of iron deficiency anemia which is common in the society.
